Kitchen Remodel Spotlight: Turning a Sunroom Into a Chef’s Dream
At K&K Designer Builds, we believe every remodel should reflect the client’s personality, lifestyle, and dreams. This recent kitchen renovation was a perfect example of what can happen when creativity meets craftsmanship. The client, a retired art teacher, had a vision to transform her cramped kitchen and underutilized sunroom porch into a spacious, light-filled culinary haven—and we made it happen.

Expanding the Space: Knocking Out Walls & Raising the Porch Floor
The original kitchen backed up to a covered sunroom porch that wasn’t serving much of a purpose. We saw an opportunity to seamlessly expand the kitchen by removing the entire exterior wall and tying the porch space into the main living area. To do this, we:
-
Raised the sunroom floor to match the existing floor height inside the house, ensuring a level transition.
-
Installed a laminated beam for structural support where the exterior wall once stood, allowing us to open the space without compromising stability.
-
Closed in the porch with energy-efficient windows that now flood the kitchen with natural light and create a cozy, enclosed space usable year-round.

Art Meets Function: A Custom Backsplash with Personality
Our client, a former art teacher, had been saving hand-painted tiles she created over the years. We were honored to incorporate them into a custom backsplash that not only adds a splash of color and creativity, but tells her story in every tile. The result? A one-of-a-kind focal point that makes the kitchen feel like a personal gallery.

Upgrades Behind the Scenes: Ductwork & Comfort
Since we were enclosing what was once a three-season porch, it was important to make the space comfortable year-round. We:
-
Ran new ductwork from the existing HVAC system to properly heat and cool the newly expanded kitchen.
-
Insulated the walls and ceiling for energy efficiency and long-term comfort.
-
Installed a brand new exterior door, replacing the original sunroom entry with a secure, stylish, and energy-efficient option that blends with the new design.

Additional Finishing Touches
-
New flooring was installed throughout the entire kitchen and extended area, tying the old and new spaces together.
-
Updated lighting, including under-cabinet lights and recessed ceiling fixtures, made the kitchen both brighter and more functional.
-
Fresh paint and trim brought the whole space together with a clean, welcoming look.

The Final Result?
A once-cramped kitchen is now an open, inviting, and personalized space that perfectly blends functionality with the artistic soul of the homeowner. It’s more than a remodel—it’s a transformation.
